Hi Alex,
If you’re interested in tri then there’s a race we sponsor in April that I might be able to get you a place in…. let me know, not sure if the timing’s right for you…
Hi Alex
Just to wish you all the best. I am a member of the Trail Running Association (who sent me a link to this site) and have managed the Ridgeway a few times so know just what it is like. I also am one all against GUCR – 2007 it beat me at 100 miles but in 2008 I survived and finished in 43 hours or so. I aim to try again in 2010. If you want any advice on prep or kit please drop me a line. Best Regards
Kim

Hi Alex
Good to meet you. Its an incredible target you’ve set yourself. You have great ambition, determination & courage; Good on you! As you know, my Dad suffered for some years with Parkinsons, so I can imagine something of what you must be going through. Look forward to hearing of your progress.
Hi Andy, great to hear from you and thanks for the support. I’m sorry to hear about your dad. I try and stay positive about the future and hope that the £1 million will change the lives of Parkinsons sufferers. It’s a big target but if you never have a go, you’ll never know.
Hi Alex,
My dad had PD since 1992. I started an information sharing yahoo group called healing parkinsons. We have members from all over the world. I would love for you to share your experiences with us. We are all fighting for the same very worthwhile cause, the best health possible. We believe we are very close to a cure for PD. Thank you for your hard work. Wishing you the very best, Destiny
Hi Helen, great speaking to you today. Will call you next week to discuss matters further. In the meantime, please have a look at http://www.facebook.com/10MillionMetres
Hey Alex,
I bumped into you on route during the canal run with steve (physio). Great to meet you. Good luck with all your events. You have inner strength my man! Let us know if you need buddy runners and stuff.
Cheers,
Dave
David, thanks to you and Steve I made it through the night. Good banter and company. How
was your 75 miles helping your mate out? Great to meet you. Stay in touch.
Studies show that Parkinson’s can be caused by pesticides and certain medical drugs. If people Google Parkinson’s + pesticides they will find info. People can also be affected if they lived near fields sprayed with chemicals.
‘What Doctors Don’t Tell You’ journal – vol 19
People who used pesticides at home or work had a 60% greater risk of devleoping PARKINSON’S. The strongest links were found with herbicides & insecticides such as organochlorides & organophosphates (BMC Neurology, 2008; 8: 6; doi: 10. 1186/1471-2377-8-6). Homes, gardens & schools may be an important source of exposure especially among children (Pediatr Clin North Am, 2001; 48: 1185-98; Environ Health Perspect, 1995; 103: 550-4) These chemicals also raised the risk of leukaemia other certain other cancers.
Here are some medical drug causes. Sufferers may want to look into whether they had any such exposures.
The Pharmaceutical Journal, 2nd October 1993 lists 15 prescribed medical drugs, which are dopamine antagonists, which are documented to cause Parkinson’s Disease.
Seven of these drugs are phenothiazines. Chemicals related to the phenothiazines are also used as herbicides and are also documented to cause Parkinson’s. The Journal states that the Phenothiazines and butyrophenome
neuroleptics are the most common implicated agents causing Parkinson’s. “The British National Formulary” reference book gives Parkinson’s symptoms as a side effect of the phenothiazine drugs.
Alex
Just discovered my name mentioned on your site. Good on you, Alex. My admiration is as great for your organizational skills as for your physical capacity.
In case the news encourages someone with Parkinson’s, I was diagnosed with PD in 1998, am 64 years of age, and as recently as a few days ago compete in gym events with “normal” people. A few days ago I rowed an indoor rowing machine 570m in 2 minutes. So far, (this comp ends to-day), I’m in second place to a 55yrs old man in the 55yrs and over category.
Garth mentioned my weightlifting.
There’s been no detrimental consequence to me in lifting “heavy” weights. I keep reps low (usually no more than 5) and restrict sets to 1.
My best lift so far is a horizontal bench press in 2009 of 110kgs (243lbs).
Intensity is the overall theme governing my training sessions.
I don’t pursue what exercises others with PD are doing but absorb advice from the best in indoor rowing, bike riding, lifting, etc,
My best wishes to your endeavours.
Below are some of my jottings.

Hi Alex,
I wasn’t in the office on your last day and I just wanted to wish you all the best with your new job and all the running.
My father had an acute form of Parkinson’s disease, so I know what a worthwhile cause it is.
If you ever decide on a move into triathlon maybe I’ll see you at the Ironman start
.
All the very best,
Simon
